Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a form of therapy where a small group of individuals meet regularly with one or more Licensed Therapists or Counselors to work on common problems and issues such as depression, anxiety, emotional, behavioral, or psychological challenges together. Group therapy can be supportive in nature and some benefits include community support, validation, learning coping skills, and hearing perspectives from others with similar experiences.

At times there are very specific groups, like a DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) Skills Group, that are intended to teach specific skills associated with that therapeutic approach. A typical group session involves discussion, guided exercises, skill-building, or feedback among group members. There are group rules that require confidentiality, respectful communication, attendance, and not judging or interrupting others. The Licensed Therapist or Counselor leading your group helps keep the conversation and treatment productive, safe, and confidential.

  • How much does a group therapy session cost?

At Sunrise Therapy Services, LLC, we believe that group therapy is a useful form of treatment and support for people experiencing many different and difficult circumstances. Our goal is to make this important treatment service available to everyone.  Our base rate per session is $30 per session out of pocket.

  • How does Group Therapy work?

Group therapy is a unique form of treatment and works by bringing together people with similar challenges in a structured setting led by a Licensed Therapist or Counselor. The Licensed Therapist or Counselor guides discussion, teaches coping skills, exploring how skills can be applied or have been applied in your own life, and helps group members interact and participate in constructive ways. Group therapy also provides an opportunity to learn from your peers well as an experienced Licensed Therapist or Counselor. Typically, groups are created with individuals of a similar age range who are looking for help and support around similar topics and issues. Groups usually meet once or twice a week, for 50-60 minutes, in person or virtually.

  • When is Group Therapy needed?

Mental health group therapy is often recommended when someone could benefit from both professional guidance and support and connection with others facing similar challenges. It can be useful on its own or alongside individual therapy and/or medication management. It can also be useful as an ongoing support and to assist those who want to practice and/or strengthen social or interpersonal skills.

  • How long does Group Therapy take?

The length of mental health group therapy varies depending on the type of group, the goals of treatment, and your needs. Some groups last only a few weeks, while others continue for months or even years. A structured skills group such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) might run for months.  A person might stop group therapy when symptoms improve, treatment goals are met or the individual is feeling confident coping independently. Your Licensed Therapist or Counselor will continue to assess and review your progress with you to decide whether continuing the group is supportive for you or transitioning to another level of care is recommended.

  • How do I know if Group Therapy is the best fit for me?

Group Therapy is not the best fit for everyone or every situation such as an immediate crisis or depending on the severity of your symptoms. Group therapy may be a good fit if you want support, perspective, and practical coping skills in a setting where other people are working through similar challenges. Your Licensed Therapist or Counselor will continue to assess and evaluate whether group therapy is appropriate based on your symptoms, treatment goals, and comfort level.
